MULTINET Project - Sixth Framework Programme

EURECOM Testbed

The EURECOM UMTS TDD Open Platform testbed in Sophia Antipolis, will provide access to one UMTS Radio Gateway platform and 2 Terminals. The EUROCOM experimental platform is the result of previous French national funded projects (namely “PLATON” and “RHODOS”. MULTINET will use this platform as starting point.

The overall network architecture developed in EURECOM platform is illustrated as follows:

This architecture is composed of different families of components:

  • Elements belonging to the “IP core” network (application server, Home Agent)
  • Elements belonging to the radio access network (Proxy Server, Comon Radio Resource Management, …)
  • Elements belonging to the terminal devices.
WIND Testbed

The WIND Testbed provides an “All IPv6” environment. It offers the radio link and the protocol stack of the UMTS access technology for packet based applications. The User Equipment is a portable PC equipped with a radio extension which can be attached to the experimental platform Radio Gateway.

The demonstration will be realized in the field so as to show the main functionalities and services.

In particular the trial will be focus on 802.16e standard able to provide broadband wireless access and mobility functions such as soft-handover and the mobility of the user at vehicular speed (maximum 120 km/h).

Basically, all traffic on a WiMAX network must be encrypted using Counter Mode with Cipher Block Chaining Message Authentication Code Protocol (CCMP) which uses AES for transmission security and data integrity authentication. The end-to-end authentication the PKM-EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) methodology is used which relies on the TLS standard of public key encryption.

According to the propagation state and throughput required will be tested different user terminals:

  • Fixed CPE with external antenna if it’s necessary to increase coverage and throughput. Local mobility will be provided with WiFi HotSpots
  • Portable and nomadic CPE in the good coverage areas (up to 6-10 Km from the base station)

EUSKALTEL Testbed – URBAN NETSPOT

URBAN-NETSPOT is a testing platform that Euskaltel has installed in the metropolitan area of Bilbao, in the areas of Abandoibarra and Gran Vía. The main goal of the URBAN-NETSPOT platform is to research and develop emerging wireless technologies and the enabling technologies associated with them. See www.urban-netspot.com

The aim of the Urban Netspot platform is to design a metropolitan wireless network. This concept goes beyond the hotspot concept to validate new mobile data services.

One of the main objectives of the platform is to innovate in advanced services for Wi-Fi networks and offer the final user connectivity anytime-anywhere. To achieve this goal, transparent mobility and unified/integrated access to Wi-Fi and cellular networks (GPRS, WiMAX, etc…) will be tested. Interoperability with cellular networks is a key issue.

The Urban Netspot Wi-Fi network will also test:

  • Advanced services, e.g., contents based on location (Wireless Flyers).
  • Applications on the Move: Mobilization of existing data applications (e-mail on mobile devices, ERP applications on mobile devices…).
  • Voice over IP (VoIP) services.
  • Security
  • etc

Finally, this platform will enable a future study of the evolution of emerging radio access technologies, to offer services based on them to the customer.

Architecture

The architecture of the URBAN NETSPOT test-bed is illustrated in the following diagram.

The test-bed is an IP-v4 Wi-Fi (Micro-mobility enabled) network, provided with location and macro-mobility service enablers. We can also use, on a commercial basis the 3G and GPRS networks already available. Therefore, the testbed will allow the testing, demonstration and evaluation on a real network of WLAN-WLAN, progressing to WLAN vs. UMTS and or WLAN vs. WiMAX.
