MULTINET Project - Sixth Framework Programme

Project work packages

The Figure below display the work package structure of the project:

The Study Logic’s Main Phases

The achievement of the objectives of the project and the minimisation of the main risks are reflected in the sequence of activities during the MULTINET project:

  • At the beginning of the project, the state-of-the-art and future trends of the mobility services technology development will be analysed. The reference models for two addressed scenarios (High –Tech Machinery Maintenance Company and a big Power Supplier Enterprise, which will stimulate other enterprises and SMEs) will be developed taking into account possibilities to apply the technology established by MULTINET. The requirements, both technological and requested by final users, will be analysed thoroughly in order to define adequately the project RTD phases and to achieve the global objectives. In these stages results from other running and finished projects like MAGNET, MVCE (in which partner nr. 8 is partner), SEINIT, Moby Dick, SAMU, PLATON… will be analysed and how they could provide input to the project.
  • After the specific needs of the industrial partners and users in general have been clearly understood and documented, it will begin to develop the precise technology to meet them. Within the system analysis phase, a strong collaboration among all partners is planned to define common and specific needs of different business cases. Furthermore, standardisation aspects will be analysed and defined.
  • The four RTD partners will elaborate the RTD solutions: to develop a mechanism for multihoming mobile multimodal terminals; to create protocols for carry out an intelligent network selection; and algorithms aimed at modification of bearer services on the fly to suit changes in the multimedia session. In order to achieve a first assessment of the adopted solutions for each case, these will be tested. The results of these test runs will be used to assess the risks and decide on the further development of the MULTINET technology.
  • The solutions adopted for each part will be integrated in a global solution (MULTINET technology) that fulfils all the requirements fixed at the preparation phase.
  • Once definite the final technological solution, pilots will be developed, with the active support of the users, and they will be tested in a testing platform (B3G Radio Software Platform) property of EURECOM, one of the partners, that can simulate multiple networks (UMTS-TDD, 3G OR GPRS, VLAN and DVB-T). The results of the testing will be used for the optimisation of MULTINET technology. This platform has been jointly developed between research and industry, and this will ensure the re-usability of the results of the project.
  • Assessing the feedback of the prototype testing and verification, the RTD partners and integrators/vendor will develop the complete prototypes for each business case to be installed at the industrial partners’ sites.
  • The complete prototypes will be installed at the SMEs/enterprises end users’ sites and thoroughly tested and verified, in order to guarantee the achievement of all the proposed aims.
  • During all the project phases, works of dissemination and advances and results idea-sharing sessions will be carried out among the entire project partners.
